SpeechText Access LLC (STA) is a unique solution to providing training and employment to Americans with mobility disabilities, while at the same time filling the critical demand for communication access for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Through SpeechText Access, people learn the skills, principles, and customer awareness required to provide captioning services. Captioning converts speech to a form of text display, which affords deaf and hard-of-hearing people equal access to spoken communication. Its use has become increasingly common in schools, businesses, public events, and webcasts, as well as television, and the demand for captioning grows rapidly each year.
This situation represents an outstanding opportunity for disabled individuals who can provide captioning services–namely, jobs. STA will help its graduates find internships and work to launch and sustain their careers. People in the captioning profession typically command above average to excellent salaries commensurate with their skill and the captioning venues in which they work.
SpeechText Access was established in 2011 by Bill Graham, a longtime advocate in the field of captioning. Graham, who is deaf, co-founded the Association of Late-Deafened Adults (ALDA) and has served on numerous deaf and disability-related national boards. STA is based in Cary, Illinois.
